Public shade trees are subject to protections under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 87, https://malegislature.gov/Laws/GeneralLaws/PartI/TitleXIV/Chapter87.  Specifically, trimming or removal requires proper posting and approval through a public hearing, unless they are deemed an immediate threat.  Removal of public shade trees is performed by Highway Department staff as well as our municipal contractors.
